Abstract

This paper focuses on the significant role of coal in energy production, as well as the challenges associated with its exploitation, particularly concerning environmental protection. Coal production, whether through surface or underground exploitation, represents a major industry in many countries, including Serbia, as coal remains the primary energy source for electricity production. It is important to emphasize that a wide range of technological solutions are used in coal mines, all of which have direct impacts on the environment. Therefore, experts involved in coal exploitation face a critical task: to extract deposits as economically and safely as possible while minimizing environmental pollution. Environmental pollution has become essential in assessing whether and to what extent mining activities have endangered the environment, and in taking timely and effective measures to prevent or eliminate the adverse effects of pollution. By implementing appropriate protective measures, adopting new technologies, and providing education and training for technical mining personnel, it is possible to continuously improve environmental protection practices, thus reducing the risk of pollution and negative impacts on the environment. This is necessary for balancing energy needs and environmental protection.
