MINING IN THE FUNCTION OF LOCAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: CHALLENGES AND BENEFITS

Abstract

Mining, as one of the oldest economic activities in Serbia, has a significant impact both on the national economy and on local communities. Recently, the narrative surrounding mining in Serbia tends to emphasize the negative effects, often overlooking the numerous benefits that this sector brings. The exploitation of mineral resources (such as coal, stone, etc.) results in negative consequences for the environment, ecosystems, and social dynamics. However, mining is an industry essential for the functioning of any country. At the local level, mining contributes to economic development, energy stability, and provides raw materials for the development of all industries and infrastructure, with a particularly positive influence on the development of local communities. The positive impact on local communities is reflected in increased employment, higher income for the local population which is of vital importance in less-developed municipalities, initiatives for local community development, and investments in the construction of local roads. Mining in Serbia faces numerous challenges. The future of this economic sector must be based on a balance between its positive and negative impacts, with a focus on sustainable development principles, adherence to environmental standards, and compliance with mining regulations.
