For the purpose of desulphurization of flue gases from units B1 and B2 of the thermal power plant "Kostolac", it was necessary to design a system for the disposal of gypsum, which is formed as a by-product in the process of binding sulfur from flue gases with limestone. The initial space for gypsum disposal is provided at the internal landfill of the Drmno open-pit mine. The regulation of landfills had to be harmonized with European regulations, in order to ensure that the environment (water, air and soil) was fully protected. For this first phase of cassette design, the gypsum that is disposed of is classified as non-hazardous waste.Drainage and perimeter channels will be used to protect the cassette base from the impact of groundwater and surface water.
